Two men were killed and another was injured in an attack following an altercation over a badminton match in Cox’s Bazar last night.
The incident took place at Larpara, adjacent to the central bus terminal in Cox’s Bazar town around 11:30pm, said Md Nazmul Haque, inspector (investigation) of the Sadar Model Police Station .
The dead were identified as Saidul Islam, 31, and Kaiser Hamid, 28.
Nazmul told reporters that Saidul and Joynal Abedin got into an altercation while playing badminton. After a heated exchange, both of them left the playground.
Later, a group of men swooped on Saidul and his friends with sticks and sharp weapons, leaving three people injured.
Locals took the injured to the Sadar Hospital where doctors declared two of them dead, the inspector said.
Monirul Islam, younger brother of Saidul, said, “After leaving the playground, I, along with Saidul and several others were chatting in front of my brother-in-law’s shop. Joynal and his two brothers Atiq Hossain and Kamal Hossain and one Mizanur Rahman suddenly appeared there and began arguing with Saidul over the match.
“At one point, they attacked us with sticks and sharp weapons. Three people, including my brother Saidul, were seriously injured in the attack,” he said.
Joynal could not be reached for comments.
Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital Md Ashikur Rahman said the two had died due to excessive bleeding before they were brought to the hospital. The other is receiving treatment.
Nazmul said police launched a drive to arrest the culprits.
