Only one member of a family of six survived a fire that broke out in Rangunia upazila of Chattogram early today.
Firefighters managed to rescue Khokan Boshak, a CNG-run autorickshaw driver alive but the rest of his family members met a tragic end, said Kamruzzaman Suman, in-charge of Rangunia Fire Station.
The deceased are Khokan’s father Kangal Boshak, 68, mother Lolita Boshak, 57, wife Rakhi Dey, 33, son Sowrabh Boshak, 12, and four-year-old daughter Shayanti Boshak, according to police sources.
Khokan was admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, said Md Anwar Hossain Shamim, additional superintendent of police (Rangunia Circle).
Police had to cut the grill of the window of one of the bedrooms to recover the bodies.
Law enforcers primarily think that the fire originated in the oven in the kitchen of the tin-shed house in Mahajanpara area of Parua union’s ward-3, the official said.
The kitchen was adjacent to the only entrance of the house, locals said, adding that the family could not get out as the fire had engulfed the entrance.
Fire service sources said they got the news around 2:10am. The blaze was brought under control with the help of five firefighting units, members of the police and locals around 4:00am.
